Carpentry — frequently asked questions

Straight answers on pricing, timings and guarantees — and the honest advice we'd give a neighbour.

My door sticks every summer — can that be fixed?

Almost always. Timber swells with humidity, and we can plane and re-hang the door so it closes cleanly all year without taking off more wood than needed.

Can you build shelves into an awkward alcove?

Yes — made-to-measure alcove shelving and storage is one of our favourite jobs. We'll measure up, show you options for materials, and build it to fit the space exactly.

Do you supply the materials?

We can supply everything, or fit materials you've bought. If we supply, you get trade-quality timber and fixings at fair prices — and we take all the offcuts and dust sheets away.

Do you make things in a workshop or on site?

Both. Fitted items like wardrobes and alcove units are measured precisely, partly built in the workshop for quality, then assembled and scribed in place — the scribing is what makes them look built-in rather than bolted-on.

Can you match my existing skirting or doors?

Usually yes. Most profiles from the last 60 years are still made, and for genuinely obsolete mouldings we can have cutters made or build up the profile from stock timbers. Bring us a photo and a rough dimension and we'll tell you what's possible.

MDF or real wood — which should I choose?

MDF paints beautifully and never warps, making it ideal for painted shelving and wardrobes. Solid timber and oak veneer are worth it where you'll see and touch the grain, or where the piece needs to last generations. We'll show you samples of both.

How do you keep the dust down?

Dust sheets on every route through the house, extraction on the saws where we're cutting indoors, and a proper clean-up at the end of each day. Most cutting for fitted work happens in the workshop, not your living room.

My house is old and nothing is square — can you still fit storage?

That's our bread and butter. Period houses are never square, and scribing shelves and units to wonky walls and sloping ceilings is exactly what bespoke carpentry means. The finished result looks like it grew with the house.

Can you repair original period features rather than replace them?

Wherever possible, yes — original joinery is worth keeping. We splice-repair rot, rebuild worn sections with matching timber, and only recommend replacement when repair would cost more than it saves. Conservation-minded work is a point of pride.
