Electrical — frequently asked questions

Straight answers on pricing, timings and guarantees — and the honest advice we'd give a neighbour.

My lights keep tripping the fuse box — can you find the fault?

Yes — fault finding is a big part of what we do. We test circuits systematically to find whether it's an appliance, a fitting or the wiring itself, and we'll show you exactly what caused it.

Do I need a certificate for electrical work?

Some work (like new circuits or fuse board changes) legally needs certification, and we provide it as standard. Smaller jobs like swapping a socket don't — but everything is still tested before we leave.

Can you add extra sockets in a room?

Absolutely — it's one of our most common jobs. We'll advise on the neatest cable route and check your existing circuit can safely take the extra load.

Are you qualified and registered?

Yes — all electrical work is carried out to BS 7671 (the wiring regulations) by qualified electricians, and notifiable work is certified and registered with Building Control as required by law. You receive the certificates for your records.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Warning signs: rubber or fabric-insulated cables, an ancient fuse board with rewirable fuses, sockets with scorch marks, or lights that dim when appliances switch on. We can do a condition report (EICR) that tells you definitively — essential before buying an older property.

What is an EICR and do I need one?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report is an MOT for your wiring. Landlords are legally required to have one every five years; for homeowners it's recommended every ten years or when buying. We carry them out and explain the results in plain English.

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?

An RCD that trips is doing its job — something has a fault. Common culprits are kettles, washing machines and outdoor lighting. Unplug everything, reset, and reintroduce items one at a time to find the offender, or call us and we'll trace it properly with test equipment.

Can you fit sockets and lights I've bought myself?

Absolutely. We're happy to fit customer-supplied fittings — we'll just check they're suitable and carry the right safety marks first. Everything is still tested before we leave.

Will adding sockets mean channels chopped into my walls?

Usually not. We route cables through lofts, under floors or in neat surface trunking wherever possible. Where chasing is unavoidable we keep it tidy and can make good ready for decoration.

Do smart switches work with my existing wiring?

Most UK homes have no neutral wire at the switch, which limits some smart switches — but there are excellent no-neutral options, and we'll recommend what actually works with your wiring rather than what the advert says.
